International Management Board 2008

Hilary Sears, Chair
Business School: Cranfield School of Management

Hilary Sears has both private and public sector experience at senior levels. She most recently completed a 15 month secondment in the Cabinet Office where she headed the Brokerage Unit, which offers career support to senior civil servants across Whitehall, and inputs into the succession planning and talent management programmes.

After a first career in advertising (with the likes of the Interpublic and J Walter Thompson groups), and marketing with Johnson and Johnson, Hilary took an MBA at Cranfield. She then moved into executive search, working for both the largest firm in the world (Korn Ferry), and also one of the smallest (her own one-person firm!). She has more than 20 years of executive search and leadership assessment experience, leading assignments for local and global clients across general management, marketing and sales, finance and human resources.

As a professional, she built a reputation for quality, tenacity and strong client relationships, and represented A T Kearney Executive Search on the European Board of the Association of Executive Search Consultants (the professional body). Externally, she has maintained an involvement in the MBA environment: she served as Vice-Chairman of the Association of MBAs, sits on the Board of the Cranfield Management Association, and has presented at the Association of MBAs Employers Forum, and at a number of business schools.  She has just been elected as Chairman of the Association of MBAs, and is keen to reach out to both schools and students.

She has also been active in trying to promote women onto boards, speaking at conferences, chairing City Women’s Network, sitting on the boards of International Women’s Forum and UK Forum, and recently chairing their Board Initiative.

Claude Sarfo, Finance Director
Business School: Warwick Business School

With a combination of banking, accountancy/professional services, an MBA and top tier multisector strategy, corporate and business development experience, Claude's skills lie in the faciltation of significant value-added contribution to developing organisations. His particular interest centres on perceived or real differences in quality of management in different global regions and causes thereof, specifically within the context of business education.  Claude also hopes to explore how the Association can drive more UK schools to reaching - and in some cases setting - the global benchmark.

After completing an MBA at The Wharton School, he spent many years working with Anheuser-Busch International, brewers of Budweiser beer, where he was involved in building up and managing the UK operation, which at the time was the brewery’s most successful international operation. He was then was responsible for the Asian operations.

Steve is currently the Regional 'Chair of Chairs'.

Carol Groombridge
Business School: Open University Business School (OUBS)

After 28 years in banking, Carol made the decision to change careers but recognised that she needed to attain qualifications other than the ACIB to be able to move outside of the finance sector. Her MBA is from the Open University and was gained in 2002.

Carol then managed a recruitment agency, set up a credit union and was then a marketing and communications manager at Business Link. She has now established herself as a self employed business consultant working solely with private dental practices in the North East, something which she finds hugely satisfying particularly as no two days are the same. This gives her the opportunity to draw from all of her past experience as well as enabling her to bring out and use many of the ‘tools’ which the MBA provided her with.

Carol has been actively involved with the Association of MBAs for 5 years and is currently Regional Chair for the North East region. She is passionate about providing quality events for members and improving member participation.

Prior to that, he spent his career with Mars Inc where he worked in every functional area and in most European countries, being based in France for almost 10 years.

An advocate of personal improvement, David believes the success of any organisation lies within its people.
